Position Summary: 

The Direct Support Person is responsible for the care and programming areas for the residents in their home.


For entry into this position the individual must have the following skills:  good communication and organizational skills; reading and math skills at a 12th grade level.

The individual should have prior knowledge of developmental disabilities.  Prior residential experience helpful.

The individual must have the ability to work with people in a positive manner; have the ability to frequently lift up to 50 pounds from the floor to waist high, teach and assist with basic daily living skills and document information factually.  The individual must have the ability to transport clients to various activities throughout the tri-county area.


The individual must have a high school diploma or GED and be at least 18 years old.  Prior experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities is preferred.  Individual must have a valid driver's license and up to date personal automobile insurance coverage (as defined in the TCRC Personnel Policies).  Individual must meet TCRC's commercial insurer's criteria as an acceptable insured driver. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Shall implement and monitor individual and group program plans under the direction of the Residential Case manager and Residential Supervisor.
  1. Shall be responsible for cleaning, laundry and safety at the residential.
  1. Shall dispense medication correctly and document accordingly.
  1. Shall record and document all necessary daily, weekly and monthly program data.
  1. Assist residents in their daily hygiene, social and community integration formal and informal goals.
  1. Shall implement, follow and monitor all TCRC safety policies and administrative policies and procedures.
  1. Follow and implement all consultant directives (nurse, dietician, recreation, etc.).
  1. Communicate with all team members regarding residents' needs.
  1. Communicate supply needs to appropriate staff (medication, groceries, cleaning supplies, etc.).
  1. Participate in training programs to meet program requirements by licensing agencies.
  1. Lift residents as necessary.
  1. Communicate with parents/guardians, neighbors, other outside agencies in a positive manner.
  1. Participate in staff meetings and other meetings as required.
  1. Assist residents with meal preparation.
  1. Provide a homelike environment by providing a comfortable atmosphere, allowing personal choice, and encouraging healthy interactions.
  1. Shall give input for residents' Individual Service Plan.
  1. Drive as needed in an agency vehicle or own personal vehicle, or transport other employees or recipients of TCRC's services in any vehicle.

Other duties as assigned that are not inconsistent with skills, abilities and qualifications
